What is the difference between power batteries and energy storage batteries?

For energy storage batteries, the vast majority of storage systems do not need to be mobile; therefore, lithium‑ion energy storage batteries are not subject to stringent requirements for energy density. As for power density, different application scenarios impose varying demands.
For applications such as peak‑shaving in the power grid, off‑grid photovoltaic energy storage, or user‑side arbitrage of time‑of‑use pricing, energy storage batteries typically require continuous charging or discharging for two hours or longer; therefore, capacity‑type batteries with a charge/discharge rate of ≤0.5C are well suited. For frequency regulation or smoothing fluctuations from renewable energy sources, energy storage systems need to perform rapid charge–discharge cycles on timescales ranging from seconds to minutes; thus, power‑type batteries with a rate of ≥2C are more appropriate. In scenarios that simultaneously demand both frequency regulation and peak‑shaving, energy‑type batteries are generally preferable; however, in such cases, power‑type and capacity‑type batteries can also be used in combination.
Compared with power‑type lithium batteries, energy‑storage lithium batteries have much higher requirements for service life. The service life of new‑energy vehicles typically ranges from 5 to 8 years, whereas energy‑storage projects are generally expected to operate for more than 10 years. While the cycle life of power‑type lithium batteries is usually between 1,000 and 2,000 cycles, energy‑storage lithium batteries are typically required to withstand over 3,500 cycles.
In terms of cost, power‑type lithium batteries face competition from conventional fossil‑fuel energy sources, while energy‑storage lithium batteries must contend with the cost‑driven rivalry posed by traditional peak‑shaving and frequency‑regulation technologies. Moreover, energy‑storage power stations are typically on the megawatt scale or even exceed hundreds of megawatts; accordingly, the cost requirements for energy‑storage lithium batteries are lower than those for power‑type lithium batteries, while their safety standards are correspondingly higher.
