Under these circumstances, most battery manufacturers are forced to produce custom battery packs for automakers, a process that is both costly and yields only small order volumes. Many companies invest several million yuan in R&D and supply‑chain integration for a single automaker, only to see the project shelved when the manufacturer declares that electric‑vehicle initiatives are unprofitable—for this reason, such cases are all too common. Yet we have no choice but to stay engaged; if we do not participate now, we may soon find ourselves excluded from the market altogether. Another expert from a research institute under the Ministry of Science and Technology told me that, based on past experience in automotive development, electric‑vehicle technology will likely need to pass through at least three stages before reaching maturity: first, retrofitting existing gasoline‑powered models with battery systems; second, fully developing an entirely new EV‑specific chassis; and third, launching commercial deployment after rigorous real‑world validation.
