Lithium batteries for electric vehicles are primarily divided into three major types: first, ternary lithium—currently one of the most commonly used lithium battery chemistries; second, lithium iron phosphate; and third, lithium titanate. Among these, lithium titanate is far less widespread and sees limited application. How long do lithium batteries for electric vehicles last? Many people find themselves uncertain when it comes to the service life of EV lithium batteries.
How long can a set of lithium‑ion batteries for electric vehicles actually last? Why do some people’s batteries last 2–3 years, and in some cases even 3–5 years? In fact, the typical service life of most lithium‑ion batteries is around 1,000 charge cycles—using standard ternary lithium materials—which corresponds to about 3–4 years.
How long do electric‑vehicle lithium batteries last? How many years can an EV lithium battery be used? Most customers have probably heard that a lithium battery’s lifespan is “1,000 cycles”—that is, 1,000 charge‑and‑discharge cycles. Once this threshold is exceeded, the battery is essentially “retired.” Many people try to extend their battery’s life by taking various measures.
Does charging your battery only when it’s completely drained really help extend its lifespan? The answer is no. A lithium‑ion battery’s rated cycle life of “1,000 cycles” doesn’t refer to the number of times you charge it; rather, it represents one complete charge–discharge cycle. One cycle means the battery’s entire capacity is fully discharged and then fully recharged—this is not the same as a single charge event.
